Jill Maytorena - Biography

Jill Maytorena Statement & Bio

To collage is to weave together fragmented pieces—a “noble conquest of the irrational.” Life itself is a messy tapestry of fleeting impressions, influences, and passions. We are living collages. Jill Maytorena’s art captures this truth, creating layered, textured surfaces that explore the complexity of human experience.

Her portraits glow with pastels and vibrant patterns, figures emerging like whispers from a dream. Jill’s distinctive style finds beauty in texture and form, using patterns as gateways to introspection and discovery.

Inspired by childhood memories, Jill recalls her mother’s home filled with wild, garish floral wallpaper—swirling pinks, greens, and golds that seemed to flow beyond the walls and wrap around her imagination. Though once overwhelmed by their chaos, she has since embraced their vivid energy, letting it fuel her work.

At the core of her art is a dynamic dialogue between figure and background, inviting viewers into a conversation between inner self and surroundings. Jill draws inspiration from artists, poets, junk drawers, and eclectic fabrics from vintage markets and LA’s Garment District.

Her process is intuitive and experimental: she gathers paper, fabric, and appliqués without plan, scattering them until the chaos reveals itself. Blending seemingly clashing patterns and textures, and drawing on unconventional surfaces, Jill transforms disorder into harmony, thriving on the challenge.

“In a state of chaotic possibilities, I surround myself with visual chatter as I sift through piles of fabric, paper, and appliqués. We are a collage—a tapestry of fragmentary impressions, influences, and interests. I create collaged surfaces that reflect this inner reality. As I draw through these elements, I investigate pattern and decoration as a vehicle for fine art.”

Now based in the coastal town of Dana Point, California, Jill’s creativity—sparked early by her family and shaped by time in England and Texas—continues to thrive. Her fearless spirit and rich heritage invite us to see ourselves as the complex, beautiful collages we are.

After completing a BFA in Fine Art, and an MFA in Drawing from Laguna College of Art & Design, Jill has won many awards for her paintings and has participated in numerous group exhibitions. Her works are in public and private collections, including the Hilbert Museum of California Art, and the Laguna Art Museum.
